1. Rule of law.

Corner stone of any management of society, the rule of law that our organisation promotes emphasizes on law abiding, and law blindness, i.e. equal treatment before the law.
It rejects arbitrary. In a country like Rwanda that went through authoritarian regimes, UDF calls for political institutions that safeguard fundamental human rights based on political pluralism.

2.    Freedom and equal opportunity.

UDF fully adheres to ideals of freedom and equal opportunity that justify struggle against racism, slavery, and colonialism, all of which Black people were victims.

Given the historical background of our country that experienced racism, genocide and massive crimes against humanity and continue to promote exclusion, these values of freedom and equal opportunity becomes even more relevant. This is UDF daily struggle.

3.    Freedom of thought and action.

Authoritarian regimes do not allow any freedom of initiative. Government proposals become Gospel truth. UDF recognizes freedom of resistance against any oppressive government measure.

4.    Solidarity.

Solidarity implies acknowledgement of various interdependance relations between social classes, between poor and rich, between families, generations and individuals. Solidarity goes along with social justice. UDF prays for a society where there is true equal opportunity whatever the life circumstances, a decent life based on sufficient and well distributed resources. Solidarity excludes any form of racism and oppression of minorities.

5. Remembrance duty.

Genocide and crimes against humanity that bedevilled Rwanda left undeletable scars. It is a crime to deny of belittle the suffering that endured victims and surviving relatives. The latter constitute a special category of population that deserves special attention. In order for such catastrophe not to occur any more, UDF takes commitment to defend and guaranty the right to life and keep alight the candle of victims’ memory.

6. Popular participation.

Citizen will trust public institutions only if they effectively control and guide the latter’s exercise of power. It is paramount for any citizen to be sensitized on his rights and duties. In this respect, UDF will introduce in the constitution a right for popular consultation. This will give to the citizen a right to initiate actions on top of facilities availed through parliament.

7.    Decentralisation.

Another yardstick of democracy is a decentralized democracy. Decisions may sometime be taken at grassroots’ level, which gives to the citizen a sentiment of self confidence in public life. Grassroots’ involvement on decision taking allows free expression of cultural , economic and social leverage.

8.    Durable development.

UDF pays special attention to a durable and self sustained management of natural resources. Environment conservation and rehabilitation of eroded ecosystems is a priority. Any decision should be first weighed in terms of middle and long term effects on environment. It is the future of humanity that is at stake.
