Kigali High Court seized of UDF-Inkingi Rwanda coordinator’s illegal and arbitrary detention

UDF-Inkingi coordinator for Rwanda Anastase HAGABIMANA appeared in Kigali based High Court this Monday, July 25, 2011 at 8.00 am but had to wait at court premises before hearing until 10.00 am. With the help of his counsel attorney Juvénal UWIMANA., he challenged his continued and arbitrary detention and sought to be freed.

In a very heated exchange of legal arguments, Mr. Hagabimana’s lawyer successfully challenged the prosecution’s spokesperson Alain Mukurarinda’s claim that the accused’s demand is baseless and that High Court should reject it.  Prosecution said the accused should lodge a suit against the person responsible for his continued detention. The accused is of the view that his lawsuit doesn’t target anybody in particular and that Prosecution is responsible for his continued illegal detention.

Though the judge who heard this case refused to release Mr. A. Hagabimana, he consented to look further into the matter to establish whether the high court is competent to hear this case. He said he will render his decision on July 29, 2011.

A security operative Silas KARANGWA  known to be involved in most political cases was seen at court premises during the hearing.

All this circus shows at length that the ruling RPF government maintains UDF-INKINGI leaders in prison in total violation of their own laws and procedures.
